Becca's Reflection on Perspective

Updated: Jun 24, 2020

I don't know about you, but I have a bad habit of thinking that my problems are far worse than anyone could imagine. As if, I am the only one to ever go through anything tough or have feelings that are less than desirable. When clearly, we all have trials and tribulations that we face each day and usually, we are not the first person to ever experience that type of feeling or situation.

However, my job has left me with no choice, but to look at my life differently. When you work in a field that allows you the chance to serve those who have numerous health issues, diseases, chronic illness, disabilities, etc., it forces you to take a step back and look at life through their lens. This is not to say that I think people who are not currently going through those types of issues don't have valid problems. It's just that, sometimes we heighten our situations to provoke a response from others like some form of pity or understanding. We want to be heard. It's human nature. But, when you see people struggling to do the basic activities of daily living like walking, bathing, eating, using the restroom, dressing, talking, remembering... I think you would be hard-pressed to try to explain your most recent struggle to THAT person.

This post is really serving as a moment of reflection for myself. Each day, I feel extremely grateful to be in the position that I am and to do the work that I do. Every time I meet with a new client, or visit my existing clients, I am reminded of how hard life really is for them day-in and day-out (and their families) and immensely humbled by their situations.

All I am saying, is that the next time you get frustrated at a stranger sitting at a red light too long, or upset with your spouse for not taking the trash out, or mad that a friend didn't text you back... think of the word "perspective". It's not easy and it doesn't mean you can't be upset at those minor things that sometimes feel "not so minor". But, I think it means that we can adjust our response to the negative stimuli in our lives. Maybe, we don't get "as mad" at those things. Maybe we try to take time to reflect, meditate, pray, and just be still. Honestly, maybe we stop focusing on the problems and turn our attention to thankfulness. We have so much to be grateful for in this life.

Hopefully, this will encourage someone today. I definitely feel as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders just after writing this short blog. Find an outlet. Share your smile with someone today. Offer kindness to each person you make contact with today. After all, you never know what anybody is going through!

Thanks to any and all that read this little blurb from my heart today on perspective and have a wonderful day!
